When I started rediscovering Bath & Body Works’ products more recent than not and came across one of their newer scents, Chasing Fireflies, I was inundated with a barrage of unpleasant imagery. I imagined the pungent odor of insect repellant as bugs were zapped to death in the dark by one of those weird outdoor bug-zapping lights. The “zzzz-zzzz” buzzing of the bugs before they met their fate was almost making me shiver in disgust.
Instead, when I opened the body wash to sniff it, I quickly fell in love. This was new and different. It was unlike anything that Bath & Body Works had ever made. While it was unfamiliar for the most part, there was something about it that was a tad familiar and made me feel nostalgic. It was the spring and summer of 1983 and my six-year-old self was hanging out in the vast backyard of the first house we lived in. My dad had just cut the grass. The illuminated woods note in this body wash was a spicy-sweet tobacco-like smell, like an older man smoking a pipe. The formulation of this body wash is pillowy soft on the skin.
This combination of freshly-cut grass and pipe smoke also reminded me of both Zest and Irish Spring soap. Sure, the both of these bars of soap were awful for your skin, but they smelled wonderful. I remember the catchy jingle in the Zest commercials from the 1980s just like it was yesterday: “Zestfully clean, zestfully clean. You’re not fully clean unless you’re Zestfully clean!” Then the man or woman would stretch out the towel that said Zestfully clean behind him or her while drying off at the end of the shower. I actually love Chasing Fireflies so much that I purchased two wallflowers of the scent when they were on sale at Bath & Body Works. My fiancé is digging the scent too.
